The Gutenberg Galaxy was published and then
when Understanding Media was published, he
became a world figure. Then you had French
intellectuals explaining the art of the movies to
each other by using McLuhanism and so on. You
found George Steiner discussing him on the BBC,
and he became a vogue among intellectuals and
among people who tried to keep up with whatever
intellectuals were doing. Jonathan Miller wrote a
little book on him, and it turned out by the end of
the book that he hated McLuhan. Nevertheless, the
fact that Miller would write a book about
McLuhan—one of the few books Miller has ever
written—was in itself a kind of a sign of his fame. I
